4.4 Earthquake Shakes Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Beyond: Twitter Explodes With Reaction

An earthquake shook Los Angeles area awake on Monday morning.

The 4.4 magnitude quake near Westwood, Ca., struck at 6:25 a.m. PDT at a depth of 5 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey's Earthquake Hazard Program. The USGS initially declared the seismic activity to have reached a 4.7 magnitude.

The epicenter (see map above) was six miles from Westwood, six miles from Beverly Hills, seven miles from Universal City and seven miles from Santa Monica.

“Cosmos” host and astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson was quick to put the geological rumbling into perspective for his Twitter followers.

“If this morning's LA quake was less than Mag 5, note such quakes occur more than 10,000 times per year somewhere in the world,” Tyson.

Others living in the L.A. area took to Twitter with less informative tweets acknowledging the quake.
