Starz’s epic pirate series “Black Sails” got off to an encouraging start in the ratings with its premiere over the weekend, drawing nearly 850,000 viewers with its initial airing Saturday at 9 p.m.
When encore airings throughout the weekend are taken into account, “Black Sails” — which is executive produced by Michael Bay — accumulated more than 2.6 million viewers, edging out the premiere of the network’s “White Queen” and becoming the network’s highest-rated premiere weekend on record.

The series, a prequel to the events depicted in the Robert Louis Stevenson novel “Treasure Island,” center around the tales of Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his men.
